mixer* 2nd Dec @ SUN

mixer

With pouring rain outside and no shirt from Stewart to brighten up the dark evening mashup* held it’s first Mixer* event. We learnt some lessons, i.e. don’t make the event so informal that you omit to give a start time for the keynote, do buy more beer and be brave – show outre videos from Youtube!

Chris Thorpe, @jaggeree,  gave a great talk entitled “The new raw materials and data chemistry” and kept us all mesmerized with his beautiful slides. Chris used to be a Research Chemist (who knew?!) and hence named the “Datalide” elements which  are impacting on “the way we do business, the way we vote …….. and the way we are”, as  Identium,Intentium,  Attentium and Locatium.

Untitled from Simon Grice on Vimeo.

Comments: @cityarchitect > @jaggeree @mashupevent Super talk tonight at #sm09 Chris, insightful, amazing clarity, nice pictures.

@britano09 > @jaggeree Enjoyed your insightful and thought-provoking talk on social (not media) at @mashupevent yesterday

Prior to this Simon entertained the room with a classic video “Social Media Guru” ( Thanks MarkHamnolan) he did so with the proviso that it might not be suitable and contains swearing – see for yourselves! Needless to say it made the room chortle and I expect most people have since watched it again, and again …..

After which we had some 30 second stand ups … the idea being to pitch your needs or an “ask” to the audience – rather than an outright self promotion slot. It was interesting to see how our first standups used their 30 seconds.

Brief run down:

*From @martinrigby and @psonar the ask was 2 parts re: www.psonar.com
1. How can we make the user experience better?
2. How can we use social media better to enable Psonar to become viral?

*Zonerider.com looking for collaborators and partners

@uberlaunch ’s ‘ask’ was/is that if anyone is looking to launch a new product online, they need to give themselves at at least 3 months before launch date to set a few key things, and that they could speak to him to find out what they are… www.uberlaunch.com

*Tom Ollerton from Ale 2.0 – members are donating time and experience to charity … Wants help on how to coordinate this!  (@andrewgerrard: Awesome idea from @Ale_2point0 - collect time from experts to give to a small cash-strapped charity)

From Nicolas Holzapfel,@cojadate, If you’re like most people, you can’t be bothered to look through more than the first dozen or so posts in an online discussion. On yoomoot, you can quickly get an overview of an entire discussion. We need people to use the beta version of yoomoot and give honest feedback. www.yoomoot.com

Alex Housley from Rummble announced that they now support  Twitter’s new Geolocation API in all outbound Rummble review and check-in tweets. This enables users to share location information in an open and accessible way with anyone on Twitter, regardless of whether they are registered Rummblers.

@ahousley > Enable Geotagging here http://twitter.com/account/settings to append geotags to Rummble tweets: http://twitpic.com/rze6m

I am sure they would love your feedback too ;-)

Then after all that the pizza arrived, yum:

Guest Post by Alan Patrick (@freecloud) Broadsight, on Social Media ‘09

robin wight 09

It is interesting to reflect on what we learned from the Mashup Social Media Event ‘09 after a few days reflection. The event itself was a firehose of information, c 20 talks over 4 hours, with lots of individual datapoints (see my original blog post over here ), but over a few days I can see a few themes emerging:

Celebrity still sells. As one wag put it, “Old media: Stick a celeb in an ad. New media: Stick a celeb on the web. Social media: Stick a celeb on Twitter.” Some things are ever thus.

Furry animals are super.
Compare the Meerkat with all the other attempts to “go viral” with cute furry things.

The basics still work
Just when you were thinking the only way to reach the paying punter was with celebrity furry animals with great tits, along came a number of talks that showed if you did the basics things well you could also get benefits: Good Narratives told well, Websites and outreach that gave helpful information to customers, understanding the customer and the Brand were all shown to work.

There are some new alternatives emerging…
A number of uses of the properties of the new media were shown:

- Government using Twitter to communicate information and services
in a number of creative ways
- Crowdsourcing of user creativity for branfd advertising has
engagement and economic benefits
- Using the real time nature of Twitter and social media to
anticipate and manage breaking news on the mainstream media

…..But one needs to re-organise to use them
Structuring the company to be social from the inside is necessary if it is to take full advantage of the new approaches. Other companies are already doing this (and your employees are restructuring themselves anyway). What are you going to do about it…..

We have only seen the beginnings of Social Analytics
Various presentations showed elements of NLP (a mouse click is a small change of behaviour presaging something bigger), Behavioural Economics (via the seduction economics of the £50 bottle of wine), Buzz monitoring and the most explicit discussion of the heavy maths used by companies like Google and Telcos I’ve ever seen in a more PR/marketing based conference

There is a tension between social media and commerce
A number of talks touched on the intrinsic intrusiveness of trying to “monetise” social media, to turn friends into customers. This is the most personal of mediums and needs to be approached varefully or else it can blow up in one’s face.

Something subtle is happening
During her presentation, Sarah Beeeny’s months-old child started whimpering. Without skipping a beat, Sarah grabbed the infant and held it to her – ahem “media ssets” while continuing presenting. And it was OK. This would have been unthinkable a few years back (and still is in audiences that are not heavy social media users). Something indefinable has changed, and I think its due to the continual relationships we now have in social media.

The Twitterwall needs to be Used With Care
When used responsibly it is a great way of getting feedback, but it can be abused in a number of ways:

- large numbers of people twting and retweeting what a person has
just said is dull, dahlings
- hijacking it for humour is entertaining, but makes it difficult
for the presenters.
- When you start to get mob behaviour and it becomes a hatewall then
that is far more worrying.

We saw show and tell from:

www.metaio.de; www.t-immersion.com; www.acrossair.com; www.mo-tic.com; www.fry-it.com; www.putitout.com; www.connectededucation.com

Overall – AR is another interface, yes it has a future but will it generate or create new value is an unknown….. but we had a very enjoyable evening debating this.

Next Event – Social Media ‘09

Social Media ‘09 (part of the Being-Digital Masterclass series)
http://socialmedia09.com/

is the UK’s seminal social media event for professionals working in the marketing, PR, advertising & corporate communications sectors.

At Social Media ‘09 on the 12th November we’re expecting over 200 of the UKs best & brightest individuals from a wide range of organisations to get together for an afternoon of learning, demos and sharing of best-practice. This event is a half-day masterclass/conference that will provide marketing, advertising, PR and corporate communications executives with the know-how necessary to develop, execute and manage a social media strategy that delivers value.

The event will run from 2pm til 6pm on the afternoon of the 12th November and be followed by a networking drinks reception. In an afternoon packed with insightful and instructive case-studies delivered by social media specialists and clients at the helm of social media campaigns you’ll learn where to start, what to do, what works, what doesn’t, what tools to use. Our aim is to make you social media savvy by sunset!

Unlike the one-way broadcast nature of traditional marketing, social media marketing is a series of ongoing ‘conversations’. Accordingly, the second part of the afternoon deals with engagement & monitoring and how to use the available tools to track campaigns and one’s brand and respond appropriately.

We aim to ‘eat our own dog food’ and use social media to both market, engage with and monitor the development of the event. We’re actively seeking ideas & suggestions on what you’d like to see included or what you think would benefit attendees in terms of helping them acquire the knowledge to effectively develop & implement a social media strategy. Please comment on this blog post or email us at team@mashupevent.com with your suggestions.

Steven: Location and social networking are important – it is here and now and worth 3.2bn. What value does the mobility portion add? How much value is associated with Time  of which there are three types
Here and now/ immediate/ this instance
Now and soon/ recommendation
Future
Lots available but where is the money?
Alex : we all need filter, location is just one that is relevant. Issue is trust and profile, especially if dependency of network to provide filters. Paris Hilton likes it simple! Location is a commodity, services will be free, subscription, advertising (hyperlocal) and by products
Ed: What has changed! Applications now by pass carriers. Development platforms are available, location is hidden and delivering context. There is value in your time/ social graph. Context = intent. This leads to trust.
Gary: Location is value, cool and orgasmic.  Privacy should be opt in not opt out. Opt out leads to lots of management issues.  Opt in gives control.  Where have your been is different to where are you now.

Key areas of Discussion: TRUST, where have you been, Destination, context, privacy

  • Trust, who owns the data, once it is out there – get over it
  • How do you decide who to share with –
  • Do you share actual data or analysis of your data
  • Privacy removes functionality – trade functionality and UI for Value and context
  • Is privacy a transaction?
  • Where and how do you make users aware of permission
  • Using Geo-fences to protect children ( who should set them up)
  • Selling location value is down to the pitch ( sounds like classic marketing)
  • Willingness to trade granularity  for value – example of travelling to US and getting a call on UK time to check that not fraud.  How do you know who a person is and where they are?
  • How much need is there for real/ actual data and how much for analysis of data that has been made anonymous!
  • How much can you think ahead. “Past performance may not be a good prediction of the future”  Stats and analysis are better than you would like to think.
  • Tracking over time may be step to far for Joe the plumber
  • Where is your social graphs data and analysis and how does that fit?
  • Where are location games?
  • “Not on the web but In the Web”

Favourite Application Would Pay for
Jeff Relevancy/ Ads Safety and security/ welfare
Steven UrbanSpoon nothing
Garry Sparrow/ Rummble Nothing
Alex Total hotspots! Relevancy
Ed Games Content
Dan Tour guide Safety

Marketing 101 – people will buy what the value and we are all different
